Storm hits Newcastle

Newcastle flood

The worst storm in over 30 years has hit Silverchair’s home town of Newcastle, Australia.

According to news reports over 6000 people have been left homeless. It is not known whether property belonging to the band (or their families) has been affected.

New South Wales Premiere Morris Iemma described the damage as worse than than the 1989 Newcastle earthquake.

Faultline, the popular Silverchair song from their debut album Frogstomp, was written about the 1989 quake which killed 13 people.

You can keep updated with the latest news via the ABC Newcastle website here, and view pictures here.

New Diorama documentary

A new Silverchair documentary will premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on June 19.

Diorama – Great Australian Albums is described as “a behind-the-scenes look at the trials and tribulations of the recording of Diorama”.

Daniel Johns talks candidly of [his] journey, aided by fellow band members Ben Gillies and Chris Joannau, and interviewees Paul Mac, Matt Lovell, John Watson and Melissa Chenery among others.

The 52 minute film will be screened at Sydney’s Metro Theatre at 7pm. Further information and tickets for the screening are available here.

The documentary will also be made available on DVD on August 22, 2007. You can pre-order it at Chaos Music for AUS$22.00 (+ p&h) here.

Fans could be forgiven for feeling a sense of deja vu about this film. There was a different documentary released in 2002 called Across the Night – The Creation of Diorama, directed by long-time Silverchair collaborator Robert Hambling.

Ben's breakfast blog

Ben Gilles has posted a short blog entry on the Silverchair MySpace page.

In a jovial post the drummer tells fans about a “nude dream”, what he ate for breakfast and – more importantly – that he is “starting to get the itch” to play live again:

We’ve had about a week and a half off and loving it! I’ve been kicking back (except jumping on the skins to keep my chops up) and I’m feeling relaxed and rejuvenated… I am starting to get the itch though… keen to do some more shows.

Silverchair sign US deal

This is the news that North American fans (and anyone else interested in Silverchair’s ongoing label dramas in the US) have been waiting for…

Silverchair have signed to Warner Music’s Independent Label Group (ILG) in the States and their fifth studio album Young Modern will be released on July 24.

What does this mean? Well, the band will be doing their first full tour of North America since 1999. They will also be promoting the album through press, radio and TV.

Whether this translates into airplay on (the notoriously tough) American radio market is another question. On a positive note it means that US fans will have their first fully promoted album release since Neon Ballroom in 1999. Ana’s Song was a hit back then, let’s hope Straight Lines can have some similar success.

Young Modern tops Frogstomp

Today comes the news that Silverchair’s fifth studio album Young Modern has become the most successful of their career.

The band’s latest release has held the top position for an impressive four weeks, beating their debut album Frogstomp which was at #1 for three weeks.

These figures are based on the Australian album chart. Young Modern has achieved double platinum status (sales of 150,000) and is the fastest selling album of their career.

The question now is whether this success in their home country can translate to overseas sales. Only time will tell, but it just goes to show what can happen when mainstream radio pick up your ‘hit’ single. Next stop: North America for a “modern rock radio” assault!
